The Cadet Fire Fighter Skills Program is an exceptional opportunity for individuals passionate about public safety and emergency response. This program provides hands-on training in fire suppression, rescue operations, and emergency response techniques. Participants will develop critical skills to adapt to hazardous and high-pressure environments, operate specialized firefighting equipment, and work effectively in a team to save lives and protect communities.

Successful candidates will receive a monthly stipend of R5 961 during the program.


Minimum Requirements

To qualify for this program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • A Grade 12 qualification (Mathematics and Physical Science preferred).
  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Have no fear of confined spaces (claustrophobia) or heights (acrophobia).
  • Be medically and physically fit.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a team and handle stressful situations.
  • Possess a clean criminal record.

Compulsory Fitness Tests

Shortlisted candidates will undergo the following assessments:

  • Reach Test: Minimum height of 1.9 meters.
  • 2.4 km Run: Completion time of 11 minutes (males) or 13 minutes (females).
  • Push-ups: 30 repetitions in 60 seconds.
  • Sit-ups: 30 repetitions in 60 seconds.
  • Dead Load Carry: Two 25 kg drums over a 100-meter distance.

Additional Selection Process

Candidates who pass the fitness test will proceed to:

  • A written assessment and interview.
  • Submission of fingerprints and identity numbers for criminal background checks (City of Cape Town clearances only).
  • A City medical evaluation and drug test at designated City facilities.
  • Claustrophobia and acrophobia tests.

Special Conditions

  • Applicants must reside within the City of Cape Town Municipal Area.
  • This program is open exclusively to unemployed individuals.
  • Participation does not guarantee permanent employment upon completion.
  • Candidates will be required to wear a uniform and adhere to City protocols.
