POST 17/31: INDEPENDENT CORRECTIONAL CENTRE VISITOR (36-Month Contract Appointment)

Salary: R85 620 per annum (3/8th, Level 05) plus 37% in lieu of benefits.

The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) is seeking committed and community-minded individuals to serve as Independent Correctional Centre Visitors (ICCVs) at correctional centres across South Africa. These roles are central to promoting inmate rights, enhancing accountability, and ensuring humane detention conditions.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Grade 12/Senior Certificate.
  • Computer literacy with high accuracy.
  • A recommendation letter (not older than six months) from a recognized community organization, nominating the applicant for the ICCV role. This is a mandatory attachment.
  • Capability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong sense of community service and knowledge of Batho Pele principles.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills—both verbal and written.
  • Assertiveness and ability to perform effectively under pressure.
  • A valid driver’s licence is advantageous.
  • Preference will be given to candidates residing in communities near the applicable correctional centre.

 

 

Key Duties:

Successful candidates will carry out oversight responsibilities within assigned correctional centres, including:

  • Daily visits to the correctional centre to engage with inmates and Department of Correctional Services (DCS) officials.
  • Recording and reporting of complaints, grievances, and other issues raised by inmates.
  • Monitoring the conditions of incarceration and documenting any non-compliance with human rights standards.
  • Reporting on serious matters such as:
    • Deaths in custody
    • Use of segregation
    • Application of mechanical restraints
    • Instances involving the use of force
  • Supporting JICS officials during inspections and investigations.
