Position Purpose
The Trainee Train Assistant supports the Train Driver in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of various types of trains and locomotive systems, including airbrake, vacuum, high speed, heavy haul, and passenger trains. The role is crucial in guaranteeing that freight and cargo reach their destinations in optimal condition and on time, meeting customer satisfaction.
Position Outputs
Duty Allocation and Preparation:
- Sign on duty at the designated workplace.
- Determine the locomotive to be prepared.
- Obtain and place necessary equipment on the locomotive.
- Check, supplement, and clean the working area and prescribed equipment.
- Assist with locomotive start-up and brake tests.
- Couple and dispatch the locomotive.
Locomotive Preparation:
- Prepare locomotives as per requirements.
- Check and supplement prescribed equipment.
- Assist with start-up and brake tests.
Communication Equipment:
- Obtain radios, handsets, walkie-talkies, and telemeters.
- Check the functionality of communication equipment.
Pre-Trip Preparation:
- Perform pre-trip inspections of locomotives and the train.
- Attach and detach vehicles as needed.
- Complete necessary documentation.
- Conduct brake tests with the train driver.
Shunting Activities:
- Obtain work orders and perform shunting tasks.
- Place and clear trucks at sidings.
- Update vehicle lists.
Enroute Assistance:
- Ensure the safe movement of the train.
- Communicate and compare signal positions with the train driver.
- Patrol locomotives and reset trip-outs.
- Protect the train during incidents and assist in emergencies.
Safety Compliance:
- Adhere to safety standards and instructions.
- Provide accurate feedback to the train driver.
Administrative Duties:
- Perform various administrative tasks.
- Complete and submit the Train Journal after each shift.
Qualifications and Experience
- Educational Requirement: Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
- Other Requirements:
- Periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioral risk assessments.
- Physical hearing, vision, mental fitness.
- Minimum age of 21 years for train driver or control duties.
- Minimum height of 1.6m.
- Psychomotor ability assessed through Vienna Testing System (VTS).
- Ability to carry heavy objects.
Functional Training:
- Completion of theoretical and practical Train Assistant duties.
- Certification to work independently as a Train Assistant.
Competencies
Knowledge:
- Various communication systems.
- Depot layout and locomotive classes.
- Train working rules and safety standards.
- Health and Safety Act, BCEA, and SANS 3004.
Skills:
- Locomotive preparation, coupling, and stabling.
- Train handling and shunting movements.
- Time management, stress handling, and communication.
- Problem-solving and numerical skills.
