Programme Overview
The Department of Tourism, in partnership with Harambee, is calling on motivated and passionate unemployed youth to apply for the Professional Cookery Learnership Programme. This initiative aims to broaden career opportunities in the hospitality and tourism industry, a sector that continues to create sustainable jobs in South Africa.
The programme is open to youth who are eager to gain both theoretical training and practical workplace experience in professional cookery. Successful participants will receive structured training designed to prepare them for future employment within hotels, restaurants, catering companies, and related hospitality establishments. Duration and Commitment
This learnership runs for 12 months. Selected candidates will be required to sign a learnership agreement/contract binding them to the full duration of the programme. Training will combine classroom-based instruction with on-the-job practical exposure.
Applicants must understand that participation requires dedication, discipline, and flexibility. Learners will be expected to work shifts that may include weekends, public holidays, and evenings, depending on the demands of the hospitality environment.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this programme, applicants must:
- Be between the ages of 18 and 35 at the time of application.
- Hold a Grade 12/Matric certificate (with English as a subject). A formal qualification in Tourism or Hospitality will be advantageous.
- Provide certified copies of qualifications, ID document, and any additional relevant certificates.
- Submit a motivational letter explaining their interest in the hospitality sector and commitment to the learnership.
- Include a comprehensive CV.
- Provide proof of residence not older than 3 months.
- Have a genuine passion for tourism, hospitality, and culinary skills development.
Note: Candidates who have previously participated in any Department of Tourism learnership or skills programme must clearly declare this in their motivational letter.
Selection Process
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Applicants may be invited to attend an interview and assessment session to determine their suitability for the programme. If no feedback is received within two weeks of the closing date, applicants should regard their application as unsuccessful.
