Introduction
Transnet, one of South Africa’s largest state-owned companies, is calling for applications for its 2025 Apprenticeship Programme. This initiative is aimed at unemployed youth who want to pursue a career in technical trades such as Electrician, Welder, Diesel Mechanic, Millwright, and Mechanical Fitter.
The programme combines structured on-the-job training with formal classroom instruction at accredited training facilities, leading to a nationally recognised trade qualification. Successful applicants will be trained under the guidance of qualified artisans while gaining practical experience across Transnet operations in Durban, Koedoespoort, Salt River, Bloemfontein, Germiston, North End, and Cambridge.

- Apprentice: Mechanical Fitter – Salt River
- Apprentice: Diesel Mechanic – Durban
- Apprentice: Welder – Durban, Germiston, Koedoespoort, Salt River
- Apprentice: Electrician – Bloemfontein, Durban, Koedoespoort, Salt River, North End, Cambridge
Position Purpose
The Transnet Apprenticeship Programme 2025 is a work-based learning opportunity designed to prepare future artisans. Apprentices will work closely with qualified artisans while attending classroom-based training to complete the National Technical Certificate Courses.
Key Responsibilities (Position Outputs)
- Prepare and set up work sites, tools, consumables, and materials.
- Correctly use hand tools, power tools, and measuring equipment.
- Install, assemble, fit, and connect trade-specific equipment and control systems.
- Test, inspect, commission, and maintain electrical, mechanical, and welding systems.
- Repair installations, assemblies, and equipment to required standards.
- Follow strict health, safety, and quality protocols during all operations.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must hold one of the following:
- N2 Certificate with relevant trade theory subjects.
- N3 Certificate in Industrial Electronics, Mathematics (Pure), Engineering Science, Electro-technology, Engineering Drawing, or Fitting & Machining.
- NCV Level 4 with Mathematics (Pure), English, Life Orientation, and trade-related vocational subjects.
- Technical Grade 12 with Mathematics (Pure), Physical Science, Engineering Graphics, and trade-specific technical subjects.
Additional Requirement:
- Age: 18 – 35 years.
