Job Description

South African Breweries (SAB), a proud part of the AB InBev family, is inviting applications for three apprenticeship opportunities in the Instrumentation trade at its Ibhayi Brewery. This apprenticeship is designed for individuals who are passionate about technology, process control, and industrial automation, and who wish to build a long-term career in one of South Africa’s leading brewing and manufacturing companies.

The purpose of this programme is to provide structured, work-based learning that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical workplace training. Over a 3–4 year apprenticeship, successful candidates will develop the skills, safety awareness, and technical expertise required to qualify as artisans in the Instrumentation field.

As an Instrumentation apprentice, participants will gain in-depth exposure to measurement systems, control systems, automation, and process optimisation, ensuring that brewery operations run efficiently and safely. Apprentices will work alongside experienced mentors, contributing to plant reliability and gaining the competencies necessary for future growth in the engineering and manufacturing industry.


Key Responsibilities

  • Successfully complete the Instrumentation apprenticeship programme in line with SAB and SETA requirements.
  • Participate in structured learning and on-the-job training focused on process measurement, calibration, and control.
  • Maintain strict compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Assist in the maintenance, installation, and troubleshooting of instrumentation and control equipment.
  • Gain knowledge of process automation systems, PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), and SCADA systems.
  • Support in planning and preparing for maintenance and calibration activities.
  • Contribute to the optimisation of plant systems, equipment performance, and process control.
  • Ensure proper documentation and reporting of instrumentation activities.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric) with Mathematics and Physical Science.
  • National Technical Certificate (N4) in Instrumentation, Electrical, or Electronics.
  • Higher qualification (N5/N6) in Instrumentation or Process Control will be advantageous.
  • Strong aptitude for mathematics, electronics, and control systems.
  • Physically fit with good vision (must not be colour blind).
  • Willingness to attend periods of formal training, including training sessions in Johannesburg.
