Job Description

The Department of Correctional Services invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for Security Officer positions based at Mangaung Maximum Correctional Centre in the Free State and Northern Cape Region. These posts form part of the department’s ongoing commitment to maintaining secure, safe, and humane correctional facilities while supporting offender rehabilitation and public safety across South Africa.

Security Officers play a vital role in ensuring the effective daily operation of correctional centres through strict enforcement of security procedures and supervision of inmates. Successful candidates will be responsible for maintaining order, protecting state property, and ensuring the safety of inmates, staff, and visitors within correctional facilities and during external movements.

The positions are offered across three competency levels, namely CB1-1, CB1-2, and CB1-3. Entry-level candidates who meet the minimum requirements may be appointed at CB1-1 level, while experienced correctional officials may be considered for higher levels based on their years of service and experience. These roles require individuals who are disciplined, observant, and capable of operating in a structured and regulated environment.

Security Officers are expected to uphold ethical conduct, respect human rights, and contribute positively to offender rehabilitation by maintaining a secure environment that supports correctional programmes. The role demands strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to respond effectively to security-related incidents. Candidates must be willing to work under pressure and adhere strictly to departmental policies and legislation.


Minimum Requirements

  • Matric / Grade 12 qualification
  • Successful completion of the Correctional Science Learnership, Basic Training, or Induction Training Course (ITC)
  • CB1-1: No previous experience required
  • CB1-2: Minimum of 10 years relevant experience at CB1-1 level
  • CB1-3: Minimum of 10 years relevant experience at CB1-2 level
  • Computer literacy
  • Firearm competency
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and procedures
  • Knowledge of Minimum Security Standards for correctional centres
  • Good communication, interpersonal, and report-writing skills


Key Responsibilities / Core Functions

  • Performing access control at correctional centres and between secured internal areas
  • Controlling and supervising the movement of inmates within and outside correctional facilities
  • Guarding inmates at correctional centres and during placement at external public institutions
  • Conducting routine physical security inspections
  • Managing and controlling stores and security equipment
  • Operating and monitoring the security control room
  • Ensuring the safe custody, care, and control of offenders
  • Supporting offender rehabilitation through correction and human development
  • Maintaining a secure, safe, and humane detention environment
