Pick n Pay invites applications from unemployed South African youth for the Blockman MasterCut Apprentice to Artisan Programme, a structured learnership aimed at developing skilled Meat Artisans within the retail sector. This programme is designed to equip participants with practical butchery skills, operational knowledge, and customer service experience required to work as a professional blockman in a retail environment.

The MasterCut Programme is a long-term career development opportunity rather than a short-term internship. Participants will undergo hands-on workplace training in Pick n Pay Hypermarket stores while progressively developing technical competence in meat preparation, handling, and merchandising. The programme is physically demanding and requires individuals who are resilient, disciplined, and committed to learning a specialised trade.

The working environment includes cold storage areas and prolonged periods of standing. The programme is open to both male and female candidates who meet the minimum requirements and are willing to grow within the Pick n Pay retail system.


Minimum Requirements

  • South African citizenship
  • Unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 34 years
  • Physically fit and able to work in cold environments
  • Willingness to perform manual work and stand for extended periods
  • Strong interest in food handling, meat processing, and retail operations
  • Commitment to completing the full duration of the MasterCut Programme
  • Ability to follow hygiene, safety, and operational procedures

Programme Training and Development

Successful candidates will receive structured on-the-job training covering the full scope of retail butchery operations. Training areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Cutting, trimming, portioning, and preparation of meat products
  • Production of sausages and processed meat items
  • Weighing, wrapping, packaging, and labelling of meat products
  • Display and merchandising of meat for retail presentation
  • Hygiene standards, food safety regulations, and sanitation practices
  • Safe handling and maintenance of butchery tools and equipment
  • Operation of machinery, including band saws and meat-processing tools
  • Stock rotation, replenishment, and loss control procedures
  • Customer interaction, service delivery, and product guidance
