Position Overview
The role of a Port Worker involves providing labor as instructed by the supervisor to ensure a safe, clean working environment and optimized cargo operations. This position requires the ability to handle various tasks related to the maintenance and operation of port equipment and facilities.
Key Responsibilities
Clean operational equipment, including ship-to-shore cranes’ windows and cabins.
Inspect the condition of containers and monitor reefer operations.
Operate rail wagons by opening and closing twist-locks.
Assist in the loading, unloading, and securing of cargo, adhering to standard operating procedures.
Perform hooking and unhooking tasks, including tarping and untarping where necessary.
Place and remove dunnage as required.
Maintain cleanliness in operational areas, including rail trucks, plants, workshops, offices, sheds, and ablution facilities.
Complete necessary documentation, such as accident reports.
Identify and utilize the appropriate cargo handling equipment and gear.
Qualifications and Experience
- Grade 12 / NQF 04 with a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience, or
- Grade 10 / NQF 02 with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
Competencies
Knowledge: Familiarity with terminal layouts, safety protocols, and stack positions.
Skills Required: Attention to detail and a commitment to cleanliness are essential.
